This week Nicki J Markus visits the blog. Nicki writes Multi-genre author of both MM and mainstream works. Everything from contemporary to paranormal/fantasy to historical. Who doesn't a wide range of selections in romantic fiction? Nicki's tagline is Nicki J Markus/Asta Idonea - Two Pen Names. One Voice. Today I asked her one question on how her surroundings influenced her writing.
BBTF: Have you found that your surroundings (i.e. where you live and work) influences your writing?
Nicki: I was born in the UK, but I moved to South Australia over nine years ago when I met my future husband while backpacking. Although I have written three works set in Australia (two MF novellas and one MM short), I still find that my primary influence is England. The bulk of my stories have an English setting, mostly in London, the southern counties, or the Cotswolds region (the scene of my latest novella release and a couple of shorts). I lived in the UK longer than I have in Australia, so these are all places I know well. Of course an author can research a place, looking at maps and travel information, and then craft a story set there. However, I find it easier to write about places I love and of which I have personal knowledge. Although I am very happy living in Australia and am now an Australian citizen, a part of my heart will always reside in England, so it's pleasant to make the occasional nostalgic trip back there in my writing.
