This week Sabrina York visits the blog. I met Sabrina online and loved her snarky humor and down-to-earth responses to my questions. Sabrina writes steamy historical romance and humorous romantic suspense. Of course, there's humor in her historical, which makes it hysterical. ;) She has three recent releases out, HANNAH AND THE HIGHLANDER, SUSANA AND THE SCOT, and GUARD DOG, her Hot SEALs crossover novella. All the books have her signature snark and are such joy to read. I've read WHIPPED, which is a prequel to GUARD DOG and both were awesome. Today I asked her one question about humor in her writing.
BBTF: Humor is a main theme in your writing. How did you get started writing humorous romance?
Sabrina: I promise, I did not intend for it to be that way! As I practiced my writing and tried to develop my voice as a baby author, I noticed a ribbon of snark weaving through my work (a vestige of my personality, I am sure). But whenever I tried to edit the irreverence out, my soul hurt.
I decided to embrace my humor and let it flow and the result is stories that (I hope) delight and surprise readers.
Used with a light touch, humor deepens our understanding of the characters. It shows their human side and allows us to enter their world.
Beyond that, humor is one of the ways I deal with the troubles of my life and I hope the same can be a comfort to those who connect with me. It is pure joy to be able to laugh, even when the chips are down. It’s almost as though we realize and accept the fact that whatever this is, it’s not forever and it’s not going to own us. It’s almost a defiance of the fates that we can still, always, laugh.
Thank goodness for that! You can find out more about Sabrina York's books on her website, especially her new releases HANNAH AND THE HIGHLANDER and SUSANA AND THE SCOT. Be sure to buy a book and tell a friend. Happy reading!
