This week Jessica E. Subject visits the blog. I first met Jessica on Snippet Sunday and really enjoyed some of her 1NS tales through Decadent Publishing. Jessica writes all sorts of romance, though I know her best for her science fiction romance. Her brand is Happily Ever Afters Across the Universe. Today I asked her one question about which subgenre of the many she writes is her favorite.
BBTF: You write in many different subgenres within romance. What's your favorite and why?
Jessica: Thank you for having me! Yes, I've written sci-fi, paranormal, and contemporary romance ranging from sweet to spicy, some New Adult, LGBT stories, and May to December romances. Though, no matter the age or sexual orientation of the characters, I always seem to go back to my sci-fi romances, whether they be about aliens, clones, or androids. Sometimes they takes place on Earth, while other times on a distant planet or in a dystopian future.
There are many reasons I love this subgenre of romance to read and write. World building is a fascinating exercise. Most of the details I know about my worlds don't make it into my stories, but it's information I need to know to make everything jive. Different species may find something normal that we find disgusting. Or the opposite. Extraterrestrials could worship trees, or nothing at all. Maybe the male carries and delivers children on another planet. And each cultural aspect is linked to another.
I also love the symbolism that can be created. An alien to me, can represent any person on this planet who feels left out, who is different from the norm, or who has a secret that will leave them ostracized. This is a theme I use often in my stories.
Predicting the future can also be a lot of fun. There are many gadgets used in past Star Trek episodes and movies that are now or soon to be our reality. Who knows, the next must have devise could be something I wrote or read about in a sci-fi romance.
So, while I will continue to write contemporaries and paranormals, the majority of my stories will be sc-fi romances, as that is where my muse and my heart are the happiest.
May you live long and prosper doing so, Jessica. ;) You can find out more about Jessica E. Subject's books on her website. Be sure to buy a book and tell a friend. Happy reading!
